NEW ART LONDON
Make May the month to head to the capital and discover up-and-coming Artists
A new generation of women is injecting fresh excitement into the capital with galleries that champion emerging talents. Coming up to its first birthday, Crisp London Los Angeles in Fitzrovia is the brainchild of American curator Hilary Rose Crisp, 27. With galleries in London and LA, Crisp gives free reign over her spaces to newcomers including Nathan Danilowicz and Jesse Ash. ‘The East End was hot before my time,’ says Crisp of her West End space. ‘It’s time for something new – a place with class.’ Opening her own gallery later this year is Poppy Sebire, 31. She made her name working with David Risley and is now going solo. Her taste is bold and accessible, with artists such as Danny Rolph (above), James Aldridge and Boo Ritson under her wing. The most unusual new space is the cavernous Peckham gallery of Hannah Barry, 25. Major make the journey to see exciting artists like Gareth Cadwallader and Matthew Stone. ‘There’s too much irony and too little honesty in the world of contemporary art,’ says Barry. ‘I think being an artist is the closest thing to a priest.’ These galleries are worth the pilgrimage.
